Hancock County Habitat for Humanity - Background Screening Portal

About Us

Hancock County Habitat for Humanity (HCoHFH), an affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International, is an independent, locally run, 501(c)3 nonprofit organization. Partnering with economically disadvantaged individuals and families, Hancock County Habitat seeks to eliminate poverty housing and to make decent, affordable shelter a matter of conscience and action. Through monetary and in-kind donations, volunteer labor, and each partner’s “sweat equity", Hancock County Habitat is able to complete projects which are then financed under affordable mortgage loans. Worldwide, Habitat affiliates improve people’s housing conditions through new home construction, rehabilitation, incremental improvements, repairs or increased access to improved shelter through partnerships with the private sector.

Background Screening Requirement

Hancock County Habitat for Humanity requires that sex offender registry checks and criminal background checks be conducted for all potential Partners, Board members, employees and key volunteers who work (8) or more hours each month and/or in particular, those who may have unsupervised contact with children, the elderly, persons with disabilities, or other vulnerable populations. Hancock County Habitat for Humanity reserves the right to recheck sex offender status and criminal backgrounds at any time during the homebuilding process, service, and/or course of employment (especially in the case of transfer, promotion, reassignment or reclassification).

Volunteers who act in a supervisory capacity (e.g. on the jobsite), are involved in ReStore truck pick-ups at people’s private residences, are frequently involved in money handling, are office volunteers with access to confidential information, and/or are Board members or committee chairs will also be subject to background screenings. Credit check(s) may be required periodically for certain positions involving money handling, including bookkeeper, Mortgage Loan Originator, and other positions.

Any person who does not consent to background checks will not be permitted to become a Habitat Partner, work and/or volunteer with Hancock County Habitat for Humanity.

Once your background check is complete, results will be made available in a secure format to Hancock County HFH for their review.

Please speak with your Hancock County HFH representative should you have any questions regarding this requirement.

If you would like to help us dedicate more of our limited funds to supporting our mission, please consider paying for your volunteer background check via your personal credit card (speak with your Hancock County HFH administrator if you have any questions).

By self-purchasing your volunteer background check, you will help us provide additional services to those in need.

We are grateful for the support of our volunteers and appreciate your consideration of this offer.
