About HC DrugFree

HC DrugFree originated at Oakland Mills High School in 1995 as the Eastern Coalition Against Substance Abuse, to respond to the alarming number of teens using illegal substances - tobacco, alcohol and other drugs and to respond to the increase in drug-related problems in schools (truancy, violence, weapons, gangs) and in the community. The name was changed to HC DrugFree when high schools across the county became involved in providing substance abuse education. HC DrugFree, Inc. was incorporated in March of 2004, and was awarded 501(c)(3) non profit status by the IRS in October 2004.

Did You Know That in Howard County...

• 34 people have died in alcohol-related collisions since 2003
• There were over 1,500 DUI arrests by the Howard County Police Department in 2009
• There were 5 fatal collisions resulting in 6 deaths, all of which were alcohol-related in 2007

Background Screening Requirement

In order to be a volunteer or employee with HC DrugFree, an organization affiliated with the National Council of Nonprofits or one of their State Associations, each candidate is required to have a criminal background check completed prior to begining their service.

HC DrugFree, as a nonprofit organization, typically incures the cost of all background checks conducted on our volunteers.
